| NHS and Health Sector Summary |
| The Financial Times reports that The Royal College of Surgeons warned yesterday that hospitals are being tempted to employ "dangerous working practices" to meet European rules on cutting junior doctors' hours. It comes after a new poll found some junior doctors had been told to say they were meeting the new rules "on paper" when in fact they were working longer hours. The new European Working Time Directive, which comes fully into force on August 1, limits the number of hours junior doctors can work each week to 48. |

| Unhealthy diet will force up childhood diabetes by 70 per cent |
|
Britain faces a 70 per cent increase in childhood diabetes because of lifestyle changes - including unhealthy eating and a rise in caesarean births - a new study claims. Cases among the under-fives are forecast to rise the fastest, more than doubling by 2020, if trends continue. The team behind the study believes that the rise in Type 1 diabetes is too fast to be explained by genetics alone and is likely to be the result of environmental factors. |

| Contact lenses that can cure blindness for millions in days |
|
Millions of blind and partially sighted people could be given their sight back after a major breakthrough by scientists. Researchers at Australia's University of New South Wales School of Medical Sciences used patients' own stem cells grown on a simple contact lens. This was placed into the sufferer's eye and within days new cells attached themselves to the damaged area. The revolutionary finding could cure corneal blindness - a condition that affects 5,000 people in Britain and millions worldwide. |
