| Calcium pills 'in heart attack link' |
|
Women who take calcium supplements to improve bone strength in middle age run a 30 per cent higher risk of heart attacks, according to researchers at Auckland and Aberdeen universities. A review of 11 trials suggests extra calcium can do more harm than good, even though broken bones account for thousands of deaths each year. Scientists believe the supplements can result in higher "serum calcium levels" in the blood, which can lead to hardened arteries. Hundreds of thousands of women take supplements either prescribed by their doctor for osteoporosis or bought over the counter as 'bone insurance'. |

| Women 'taking a risk with home birth' |
|
A Lancet editorial has claimed that women should not have a "right" to select a home birth due to the inherent risk it poses to their unborn child. The commentary was based on US research that found that home births are three times riskier for newborns than hospital births. The article claims that women with high risk pregnancies should not be offered home birth as an option and said that other women should be warned of the risks involved in not giving birth in a hospital. |

| NHS and Health Sector News |
| The Financial Times reports that a hospital where four babies died under the care of one surgeon must not resume heart surgery until it improves. The paediatric heart surgery unit at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital must remain closed until the right mix of doctors is in place or until it links up with another unit. The Daily Mail reports that increasing numbers of Muslim brides are having taxpayer-funded 'virginity repair' operations before marriage. There were 116 hymen replacement operations carried out on the NHS between 2005 and 2009. The Daily Mirror reports that a survey of 42,000 medics by not-for-profit group GS1 UK found that hospitals waste thousands of hours every day tracking down missing patient records and lab test results. |
